What does it mean if it indicates that the Location Details are Protected?

While MountainNature.com believes that the ability to search for recent sightings is an incredibly valuable tool, we also believe that certain details should be protected. For instance, in the case of large carnivores including wolves, cougars and bears, we have blocked the specific location. We believe that most users of MountainNature.com would prefer that we not make public announcements of their whereabouts.

Some believe that we should reveal bear locations to help trail users avoid danger

We have discussed this issue with numerous park wardens, naturalists and biologists and they all agree that this is not an advisable practice. First, since many sightings reported are along roads, they are not very helpful in determining trail safety. At the same time, it is beyond the scope of this site to try to stay on top of every sighing in the Rockies. Your best source for bear safety warnings is to look at the trail reports made available by each park area. Click here for links to these trail reports
