Description: Alders are distinguished by their dark, horizontal or speckle-like markings on the bark, coarsely toothed leaves, and several small cone style seed cases attached to a small branch. Look for the green alder on steep subalpine avalanche slopes. The leaves are deeply toothed and shiny green in colour. The bark is speckled, and the cone-like seed cases (catkins) clearly visible.
