Dogwood Family (Cornaceae)
Red-osier Dogwood
Cornus stolonifera
Season: Spring
Habitat: Montane on both sides of Continental Divide
Height: Up to 2 m
Description: Easily identified by its bright red stem, and white berries, the red-osier dogwood is a common plant of streamsides and other moist areas. Typical of the dogwood family, the veins run parallel to the leaf-margin. The large (6-15 cm long), oppositely arranged, smooth margined leaves are dark green above, but paler below, and taper to a point. The underside is slightly haired. The four-petaled flowers are a greenish-white colour. Later, the flowers are replaced by greenish berries. Giving a berry a firm squeeze sends a small, hard seed flying. Many kids have had fun with dogwood berry fights.
