Foxtail and Timothy Grass

Description: Foxtail grass (Alopecurus spp.) and Timothy grass (Phleum pratense) look almost identical to one another, and can only be truly distinguished using a magnifying glass. Most observers will merely group the two together under either name. They grow upwards of 50 cm high, with several clasping, alternate, narrow leaves branching off the stem. The plant is topped with a tight head resembling the tail of a fox (hence the name).
