Description: Sedges are extremely difficult to identify, with more than 80 different species growing in the Rockies. The most common genus, Carex, can be identified by their triangular stems. This leads to the common rhyme 'sedges have edges' to help distinguish them from the flat stems of grasses. The sedges grow in wet environments. The head of the sedge can vary dramatically, but most have a brownish seed heads.
