Description: This elegant plant is common around the margin of marshes. Its purple, fern-like leaves appear early in the spring. Later, a delicate spike of pink flowers appear. Looking closely at each individual flower, you'll notice a remarkable resemblance to the head of an elephant, complete with upturned trunk, hence the common name.
