Figwort Family (Scrophulariaceae)

Yellow Rattle
Rhinanthus minor or R. crista-galli

Season: Summer
Habitat:
 Montane Meadows
Height:
 Up to 50 cm

Description: This uncommon plant is easily identified by its unique flowers. The flowers grow along one side of the stem, and have yellow petals which swell into an inflated pouch. The pouch is flattened along two sides. The yellow petals protrude slightly from within this pouch. Later, the dry seeds are enclosed within the pouch and rattle when shaken, leading to the common name. The oppositely arranged leaves are sharply toothed, almost triangular in shape, and clasp the stem.
