Grass-of-parnassus Family (Parnassiaceae)

Fringed Grass-of-parnassus
Parnassia fimbriata

Season: July/August
Habitat:
 All Elevations, but Mainly Subalpine
Height:
 15-50 cm

Description: The fringed grass-of-parnassus (P. fimbriata) is a delicate flower which prefers wet locations. Look for basal leaves rising on short stems. They are fan shaped, approximately 5 cm long, and may be curled at the base. The veins run parallel to the leaf margin. A single tiny leaf is found halfway up the stem. The single flower is 2.5 cm across, white, and has a distinctive yellowish fringe, like that found on a western jacket, near the base of the five petals. The similar alpine grass-of-parnassis (P. kotzebuei) lacks the leaf midway up the stem.
