Lincoln's Sparrow
Melospiza lincolnii

Sparrows, Grosbeaks and Buntings
Sparrows, Finches & Grosbeaks (Emberizidae)

Size: Length: 13.5-15 cm

Description: Very similar in appearance and preferred habitat to the song sparrow, Lincoln's sparrow is a common summer sight. The crown is brown, with a gray median stripe. There is a thick gray eyebrow line. The cheek is brown with three dark lines on the face, one forming an eye-streak, another outlining the lower edge of the cheek, and a third outlining the edge of the throat. The neck is gray. The back, rump and tail are brown, streaked with black. The breast is buff, streaked with brown. The streaking is much lighter than that of the song sparrow. The belly is white. They scratch the ground for seeds and insects. They make a grass nest on the ground, usually in wet areas, around bogs, alder and willow thickets from the montane to the subalpine. The call is a musical collection of triple notes. The first three notes are slow notes, followed by a few quicker, higher notes, and then a rapid trilling. It finishes with a few concluding notes. Unlike most of the other sparrows, Lincoln's sparrow is rarely parasitized by cowbirds.
