Bonaparte's Gull
Larus philadelphia

Gulls and Terns
Gull Family (Laridae)

Size: Length: 30-36 cm Wingspan: 84 cm

Description: Our only reasonably common black headed gull, Bonaparte's gull is easy to spot. The head and beak are black, while the nape, back and breast are solid white. The wings are gray. The tips of the primaries are black. There is a faint white eye-ring. The feet are orange. In flight, the fan shaped tail is white. Most of the upper wing is gray with the exception of the outer primaries which are white, tipped with black. It can be distinguished from the rarer Franklin's gull by its black beak. Franklin's has an orange bill. In flight, Bonaparte's gull has more white in the wings. Franklin's wings (from above) are gray with black tips. The wing tips, and black section are outlined with white. They eat a variety of foods, from dabbling for invertebrates, tadpoles and small fish, to capturing flying insects. The nests are usually in the tops of conifers. They are social nesters, often with large nesting pairs in the same stand. They may use the old nests of jays or hawks. The 3 buffy, blotched eggs hatch after approximately 23-24 days.
