Mountain Nature Network has become THE place for learning about the birds of the Canadian Rockies.

Yellow Warbler
Dendroica petechia

Warblers and Tanagers
Wood-Warbler Family (Parulidae)

Size: Length: 11.5-13.5 cm

Description: One of the most widespread North American warbler, the yellow warbler is also one of the most beautiful. Both male and females are almost entirely yellow, causing them to mistakenly be called wild canaries. The olive-green wings have yellow edges to the feathers The breast of the male has red streaking visible. Females lack this red, and are slightly more drab overall. There is no eye-ring or eye line. They are commonly found in alder or willow thickets, preferring to be near wet locales where they can feast on a diversity of insects and caterpillars. They nest in trees, usually lower than 2.5 metres high, building a nest in the fork of a branch. The warbling call consists of a rising series of notes: "tseet-tseet-tseet-sitta-sitta-see".

Yellow warblers are a favourite host for brown-headed cowbirds which lay eggs in 40% of nests. The common nature of this parasitism has led them to be equally aggressive in dealing with the problem In almost 75% of cases, the yellow warbler will either abandon the nest, and re-nest elsewhere, or simply build a new nest atop the old.
