Golden-crowned Kinglet
Regutus satrapa

Kinglets, Bluebirds and Thrushes
Old-World Warbler Family (Regulidae)

Size: Length: 9-10 cm Wingspan: 17-18 cm

Description: A common summer and occasional winter resident, look for the golden-crowned kinglet in coniferous forests from the montane to the subalpine. As Canada's smallest songbird, it is a small bird with an olive coloured back and light underside. The head of the male has a multi-coloured crown topped with orange, then yellow, black and finally a white eyebrow line. Females lack the orange colour on the crown. There is a dark eye line, and a short, pointed bill. The feathers and tail are dusky, edged with yellow. Notice the two white wing bars. The underside is white, tinged with olive. Kinglets feed on insects, seeds, berries and sap. They suspend their nest from conifer branches with an opening near the top of the spherical nest. It is suspended and cemented with the help of spider web silk. The nest is generally placed towards the top of the tree, but may be as low as 1.5 m. Their call begins with two or three high notes, "tsee--tsee-tsee" followed by a rapid series of chattering notes.
