Mountain Nature Network has become THE place for learning about the birds of the Canadian Rockies.

Pine Grosbeak
Pinicola enucleator

Finch-like Birds
Finch-like Birds (Fringillidae)

Size: Length: 20-25 cm

Description: An occasional year-round resident in the Rockies, the pine grosbeak is a hardy Canadian bird. The males are stalky with strong reddish colour on the head, breast, back and rump. There is a dark eye streak and a small patch of nasal clumps in front of the eye. The flank and lower belly are gray. The dark wings have two white bands and the feathers have light brown edges. The tail is dark. Females are more generally gray in colour, with some rusty-brown on the head, cheek, nape and rump. The white bands are still visible in the dark wings. The tail is also dark.

They use their thick bill to crack open seeds, cones, buds and berries. They may visit bird feeders, attracted by plentiful supplies of sunflower seeds. They nest in conifers, making a loose nest of tree roots, twigs, grasses and the like. Because they are very secretive during the nesting season, they are more commonly observed during winter when they form small flocks. The call is a warbling, repeating pattern of three notes, with the middle note higher: "tew-tew-tew…tew-tew-tew…tew-tew-tew".
